Important results from the project
The project´s aim is to create a more complete database of significant Swedish product and process innovations than the previously existing database SWINNO 1.0. At the end of the project a complete and methodologically rigorous database was provided for the period 1970-2018. The database is freely available through the project´s website: https://www.ekh.lu.se/en/research/economic-history-data/swinno. Research based on the database has led to a number of published articles and reports with relevant conclusions for evidence-based innovation policy.
Expected long term effects
The project´s main result is a publicly available and methodologically rigorous database for the period 1970-2018. It is based on a relational database infrastructure that links information about innovations, companies, journal articles, patents and more. Research on the basis of the database has resulted in a number of conclusions for evidence-based innovation policy, e.g., about publicly funded innovations, the drivers of innovation and long-term innovation trends. Results from the database have been presented at seminars and disseminated in the media.
Approach and implementation
The project has largely consisted of several data collection and processing steps related to the project´s overall objectives. Data has been collected from 15 trade journals for the years 2008-2018, and the consistency and quality of the data material has been ensured. In 2018, studies were carried out on the significance of innovations. A survey was sent to a large number of companies and a series of company interviews were conducted. The interviews give a predominant picture of Swinno innovations as significant in some sense, but also point to challenges that justify further analyses.
