Sustainable polyhydroxyurethane coatings and foams

Reference number
Coordinator Cyclicor AB
Funding from Vinnova SEK 2 000 000
Project duration November 2013 - April 2016
Status Completed

Purpose and goal

Most of the activities planned for the sustainable production of PHUs and their application for coatings and forms have been performed to reach the set goals. Coating and form formation, optical 3D-printing, biocompatibility and cost evaluation was investigated. 2 PCT patents have been filed for sustainable production of PUs and polycarbonates. Company contacts have been made and samples provided for testing. With regards to scaling up the production of products, Cyclicor was successful in scaling up its process to the 100l scale and finding a reliable production partner.

Expected results and effects

2 PCT patents have been filed. Biobased cyclic carbonates and polymers. Samples have been made available for evaluation. Data on polymerization mechanisms and conditions for producing novel materials Data on coatings and foam formation is available. Data on the techno-economic evaluation, 3D-printing and biocompatibility is available. A company has been developed with a business model of licensing out the technology. Key scale-up challenges were finally overcome both regards to finding a reliable partner and verifying the scalability of the process.

Planned approach and implementation

The work plan was successfully implemented. 2 patent applications have been submitted for protection of the technologies. The sustainable production and application of the novel polymers has been verified. Pilot scale production (10kg) has been demonstrated. Potential collaboration and business partners and investors have been made to commercialize the technologies. Continuous efforts to contact potential customers, has led to a highly positive response. Decision to target high value applications of the polymers.
