Purpose and goal

The aim of the project was to examine how less valued suburbs could be renewed together with residents and other stakeholders through Urban Living Labs (ULL) in order to increase the sustainability. The project has developed and tested different ULL-methods to involve residents and stakeholders, developed and implemented six renewal actions together with residents and stakeholders as well as evaluated the ULL approach and renewal actions with regard to their impact on sustainability and assessed its potential for up-scaling.

Expected results and effects

The project has resulted in a development of the ULL approach and ULL-methods for involving residents and other stakeholders, and increased the understanding of how ULL can be used in the renewal of less valued suburbs. The project has also, by implementing six renewal actions through ULL, contributed to increased social and environmental sustainability in Alby and Peltosaari, increased participation of residents and stakeholders and promoted exchange of knowledge between various actors.

Planned approach and implementation

The project has been implemented through mainly three work packages (WP). Within WP 2 the boundary conditions for successful ULL have been examined and possible ULL-methods compiled, which has formed the basis for further work. In WP3, a total of six ULL in Sweden (Alby) and Finland (Peltosaari) were developed and implemented together with residents and other stakeholders. The work in WP4 focused on the evaluation of the implemented ULL with regard to sustainability and the assessment of potential for up-scaling in other European cities.
