Venture Challenge-Driven Innovation – Stage 1 initiation

Important results from the project

The project aims to enable STEM education on equal terms for upper secondary school, e.g. by ensuring laboratory resources for everyone. In step 1, a conceptual solution has been developed that fulfill the aim through modern pedagogy and technology. We want to make laboratory teaching attractive and understandable for all students by integrating laboratory elements into specific thematic areas, and thus putting technology understanding in a societal perspective. Remote-controlled physical laboratory environments comprise an important part of the solution.

Expected long term effects

In step 1 needs and conditions have been thoroughly analyzed to be able to develop a solution that is relevant and feasible to implement. Relevant stakeholders such as schools, publishers and suppliers of laboratory equipment have also been identified. In step 1 the concept of Flipped laboratory has been designed and a plan has been developed for the development, testing and implementation, and later dissemination, to achieve the overall goal of good and relevant education for all, and increased technology-related competence in young people and adults.

Approach and implementation

The project used a theory-informed, iterative and interdisciplinary approach. Statistics from Statistics Sweden and the Swedish National Agency for Education, analysis of similar concepts, interviews with teachers and a questionnaire survey answered by 199 high school students have been used to increase understanding of needs and conditions. The concept has been developed and designed to meet identified needs in interdisciplinary dialogue. Discussions with potential stakeholders for step 2 and a workshop for relevant stakeholders was organized at the end of the project.
