Important results from the project
Numerical simulations (or, in general, by CAE - Computer Aided Engineering) play a crucial role in product development, but validating their results to support decisions often comes with several technical and organizational challenges. The project aimed to develop concrete case studies where industrial actors could test standardized processes to facilitate evaluation of credibility of numerical simulations Project focused on spreading knowledge of existing standards and methods to reduce risks and streamline processes in CAE.
Expected long term effects
The project created significant practical experience on how quality work for CAE can be organized and implemented in a systematic and traceable way. Starting points from analyzed case studies led to concrete proposals to improve quality work within participating organizations and also ideas for new project that will build on the work done in STEERING, among other things linked to the growing application of numerical simulations as a basis for certification of various products, typically in combination with more established methods based on physical testing.
Approach and implementation
RISE coordinated the project in collaboration with Validus Engineering and Volvo Cars. Establishment of standards for evaluating credibility of numerical simulations in industrial applications was investigated through 4 case studies that analyzed quality issues of numerical simulations using in certification processes (scaffoldings and crash barriers) and in energy calculations of cars. The analysis followed existing standards to manage quality work in CAE, e.g. PCMM from Sandia Labs and NASA standard 7009. Some workshops coordinated, also open to external participants
