Purpose and goal

The purpose is to innovate new robust and cost efficient sensors integrated into castings, with associated sensor systems. This will enable robust digitalized control and monitoring of machines and constructions in harsh, hard to reach and remote environments. Goals: proof-of-concept-prototypes, scientific articles and applications for further research projects. And also establish an innovation and research platform, a blueprint for the intedisciplinary innovation eco system for the concept, and an innovation strategy for smart castings.

Expected results and effects

This innovation contributes to the digitalization of industry by enhancing cast metal to also become a digitizable component. This will provide product designers and business developers with a wholly new material dimension, and a capability for new business models for metal components. In addition castings with sensors contribute to resource efficicency, by for example facilitated service and resource efficicent constructions. The innovation also starts an entirely new innovation and research platform and new value chains by the innovation eco system sparked by smart castings.

Planned approach and implementation

The work is arranged into six work packages, the first the being project management, the four work packages 2-5 stepwise defines industrial requirements, researches, trests and develops the technology through a series of sensor equipped cast metal prototypes. The sixth work package focuses on networking, dissemination and the establishment of the innovation and research platform and of the innovation eco system.
