Important results from the project

The current bus business model poses significant risks for transport operators when it comes to accessibility issues related to poor winter road conditions. The operators pay large fines to transport authorities for reduced punctuality due to poor road conditions. Since a bus route often runs on road sections with several actors responsible for winter road maintenance, accessibility issues cannot be prevented if all road operators improve their winter road maintenance.

Expected long term effects

The project will ultimately lead to resource-efficient winter road maintenance with optimized activities based on better information and tools for planning, execution and follow-up of the operation. Another effect is a more attractive bus service through increased accessibility, punctuality and regularity of bus service. Another effect is increased gender equality by making road maintenance and public transport work more attractive thanks to a better and modernized work environment.

Approach and implementation

The project was a technology and system demonstration of a connected road transport system. Various digital support systems have been used to prevent accessibility problems that can be caused by poor winter road maintenance through more efficient winter road maintenance. Information from various sources, such as connected cars and buses, as well as from applications for road condition forecasting and IOT sensors, has been used. The method has been evaluated and the effects have been identified.
