Important results from the project

The initiative culminated in the creation of an automated disassembly pilot system for EV lithium-ion battery packs, enhancing the efficiency of mechanical recycling. This robotic pilot system is capable of performing different critical disassembly operations of battery components, facilitating the recovery of valuable metals and ensuring sustainable raw material utilization and ensuring a safe and ergonomic EV battery pack Disassembly.

Expected long term effects

The main project results and outcomes are: (A,B) Detailed and validated mechanical study of the disassembly process, (C) Installed and commissioned robotic EOA tools (TRL 7), (D) deployed vision system (TRL 7), and (E) Pilot scale robotic fully functioning system integrating all project parts in robotics, tooling, vision systems, and digital solutions (TRL 7). Additionally, the project has impacted significantly in the technological readiness of robot dismantling, opening new R&D perspectives both for recycling and flexible robotics.

Approach and implementation

Approaching the project challenge with well-defined work packages and responsibilities respectively linked into the final target helped creating a cross functional team. Each project party contributed mostly within its specific designated area but also collaborated in the shared integration areas, sharing knowledge and acquiring new expertise across organizations. Moreover, weekly meetings were established and consistently attended by most team members. Such consistent communication significantly contributed to building strong team dynamics and collaboration.
