SALMONAID: SALMONid Aquafeed from Innovation and Development of microfungi

Reference number
Coordinator RISE Research Institutes of Sweden AB - SP Food and Bioscience, Göteborg
Funding from Vinnova SEK 4 711 019
Project duration November 2016 - April 2020
Status Completed

Purpose and goal

The main goal was achieved: development of wood-based feed for salmonids. We also achieved several short-term goals. New transdisciplinary collaborations and collaborations between industry and research has strengthened Swedish research capacity through collaborative investigations. The SCP feed concept is now closer to commercialization based on industry interest seen. Investors are however still needed for achieving long-term goals related to production of resource-efficient feed.

Expected results and effects

The project produced technical solutions and process descriptions for wood-based SCP; scientific publications are being finalized. Investors are however required for more long-term effects related to Sweden´s Environmental Objectives, competitiveness and jobs, where international industry interest is today greater related to aquaculture. However, the collaboration and experience from the project have great potential for continued feed development also for other sectors that are today dependent on soy.

Planned approach and implementation

Domsjö delivered substrate for Processum to produce both small batches for analysis at RISE and large quantities in the Biorefinery Demo Plant for feed production. The large-scale feeding experiments were carried out by SLU in Kälarne during summer 2019. LCA data were collected continuously. Project running included annual project meetings with project partners, with in connection, input from the reference group physically or online. Coordination of the final phase of the project was facilitated through monthly, shorter Skype meetings.
