Important results from the project
The trend of autonomous vehicles implies that the safety sensors become very important. The aim of this project was to develop a first prototype where obstacle detection based on 3D camera technology can be demonstrated. The project has led to the launch of a new generation of 3D cameras with higher resolution and less sensitivity to disturbing ambient light.
Expected long term effects
The project has contributed to the growth of Fotonic, which has almost doubled the number of employees. The project has also resulted in IP and deeper knowledge within 3D camera technology. This ultimately led to the company being acquired in order to invest even more in LIDAR for safety applications.
Approach and implementation
The project has been structured in different phases, initially analyzing technical performance and technical challenges. The results from the first phase have been the basis for continued technical development, which has been more focused on hardware development than originally planned. Discussions with customers and research partners have also been an important part in the project.
