Purpose and goal
The project explores the feasibility of two innovative methods to reduce the molybdenum emissions to water from the iron and steel industry. Through selective separation with liquid membranes, optimised processes for better control, molybdenum can be captured and recycled, hence the release to water and ecosystems can be reduced. The goal is to create a basis for a future Track 2 proposal.
Expected effects and result
The project is expected to reduce molybdenum discharge to surface waters, protect ecosystems and grazing animals, and strengthen the competitiveness of Swedish steel and environmental technology. It contributes to sustainable water management and supports the goals of Water Wise Societies and the UN objective on clean water.
Planned approach and implementation
The work includes a literature review, bench-scale trials and testing of two technological pathways, supported by dialogue with environmental technology companies and analysis of scale-up potential. IVL leads the project in collaboration with Outokumpu as need owner, with focus on verification, data collection and method development.
