Purpose and goal
The RSI (Road Status Information) project at Klimator AB has proven that the accuracy and precision of forecasting tools for winter road maintenance is vastly increased by the use of vehicle mounted road condition sensors. There´s a huge benefit for the society and the environment as such system enables correct countering measures thus improved road safety and reduced use of road salt and lowered overall operating costs.
Expected results and effects
By the data fusion from road condition sensors and existing forecasting data better accuracy and precision is expected in road condition forecasting. The project has demonstrated that data from connected vehicles vastly improves the accuracy in this forecasting process.
Planned approach and implementation
Initially the project started of by the mounting of road condition sensors in vehicles in a reference area in the city of Karlstad. The sensors are connected in real-time to the Back-end forecasting system of Klimator. A graphical user interface has been developed to visualise the information for road contractors as well as for road users.
