Important results from the project

The aim of this project was to evaluate novel, size-controlled, graphene reinforced nanocomposite materials with advanced thermo-mechanical performance. The main challenge was how to manufacture a graphene as reinforcement in thermoset composite with very good dispersion. Two different manufacturing processes were investigated to determine the best way to get an optimum dispersion of graphene. Mechanical testing was performed to study the effect of graphene on the elastic properties.

Expected long term effects

Graphene has remarkable properties such as high thermal and electrical conductivity. These properties allow graphene to be used in a wide variety of sophisticated applications such as structural composites, sensors, and solar cells. To be used in those applications, there are still questions which need to be addressed, and one of them is how to get a good dispersion of graphene after manufacturing. Within this project a great knowledge was gained on how to handle graphene and which manufacturing process should be followed to get a very good dispersion of graphene in a polymer structure.

Approach and implementation

The main partners in the projects are Graphren (SME) and RISE SICOMP. A project course was done within the project where students from Linköping University were involved in the literature review, manufacturing and testing. The graphene material was provided by Graphren. The manufacturing was done at RISE SICOMP by experts within the area of manufacturing. Sample preparation and testing were performed together with the students at Linköping University. A final report/presentation was given by the students where the results/main challenges were very well described.

The project description has been provided by the project members themselves and the text has not been looked at by our editors.
