Purpose and goal

Product Innovation Engineering program, PIEp, strives to increase innovation capability in people and organizations. Through conducting high-quality research that result in actionable knowledge and applicable methods, in the same time as supporting the change processes in our partner companies, we conclude that PIEp has met the high-level ambitions set and given positive effects on innovation capabilities on both individual and organizational level.

Results and expected effects

PIEp has delivered results such as knowledge, methods and tools within several areas that are critical for organizations´ innovation process e.g. idea management, managing both incremental and radical innovation work, measuring innovation, and decision making. PIEp also has developed models that enable researchers to disseminate research results regarding innovation management, and for practitioners to implement the research results. This has contributed to that actual effects have been reached.

Approach and implementation

PIEp has been a collaboration between six universities since 2006: Luleå Technical University, Umeå Institute of Design, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Jönköping University, and Lund University. PIE has addressed `to increase the innovation capability´ in different ways where the research projects have been the core activity. 40 projects have been conducted in close collaboration between 55 researchers, 22 PhD students and 113 companies. The amount of actors has been a powerful tool for change, but also a challenge to coordinate.
