Purpose and goal

POPFREE aims at contributing to promotion of marketable PFAS free products by developing competitive alternatives with reduced environmental footprint and market pull. Transdisciplinary collaboration will contribute to marketable PFAS free products, competent buyers, decreased environmental impact and competitive Swedish industry.

Expected results and effects

New technical solutions will contribute to decreased environmental impact, competent buyers along the value chain, and competitive Swedish industrial partners. Increased consumers awareness on the health- and environmental aspects associated with PFAS and also on the content of the purchased products will lead to the choice to by PFAS-free products. The project will be the base for an objective platform to facilitate collaboration and sharing of information between institutes, universities, the private and public sectors.

Planned approach and implementation

In this project, a transdisciplinary consortium will perform functional testing of fluorine-free alternatives and gather information of their health and environmental impact to identify the most promising alternatives. Communication channels, i.e. websites or social media, will be used to inform manufacturers and consumers and aid them in making educated choices. A life cycle perspective will be taken in the project considering diffuse emission . By pushing the development of alternative solutions, this project will facilitate implementation of new policies and regulations.
