Purpose and goal

The project aims to validate technical and economic assumptions for Besca’s microwave plasma technology for granular activated carbon reactivation. The goal is to demonstrate energy efficiency, verified PFAS removal (while exploring the potential for degradation) and commercial feasibility, paving the way for a demonstration plant in Sweden.

Expected effects and result

The project will deliver a techno‑economic analysis, optimized process parameters and verified PFAS removal, while exploring the potential for PFAS degradation. Expected effects include reduced energy use, lower costs and improved water quality, supporting circular economy and enabling a Swedish demonstration plant.

Planned approach and implementation

The project is structured into four work packages: OPEX study for drying, CAPEX analysis, plasma reactivation optimization and a feasibility study for a demonstration plant. Besca leads, IVL verifies PFAS removal and explores degradation, while Uppsala Vatten provides data and samples. Results are integrated into a techno‑economic model.
