Important results from the project
The aim of the project was to develop a new technology for optimization of the fiber-matrix interaction in carbon fiber reinforced thermoplastic composites. The technology is based on plasma-mediated surface conditioning of carbon fibers. The project results show improved adhesion for carbon fibers modified by plasma treatment. Best results were obtained when the plasma treatment was applied after the weaving procedure in the production process. The project results are promising, making the methodology of the project an interesting scope for further research and development.
Expected long term effects
The project results include a well working methodology for surface conditioning with plasma technology, weaving procedure for surface treated carbon fibers, manufacturing of thermoplastic composites as well as an increased knowledge and competence within this type of preparation. Also, methods for manufacturing and evaluation have been developed which could be optimized within further projects.
Approach and implementation
Despite some changed conditions due to external circumstances, the project has been able to, in all essential parts, follow the original plan. Certain operations, such as the analysis of the surface modified fibers, have been more complex than expected resulting in a less extensive test plan. Yet, the competence level for all parties involved has been increased in all parts of the production process from surface modification with plasma technology and analysis to production of composites and test method procedure.
