Important results from the project
The "Status" tool has been developed and is working as expected. The project has run in parallel with other projects and together they have achieved the desired energy savings. The "Status" tool has contributed to smoother operation and has thus made it possible in parallel projects to control the most energy-intensive equipment in a more optimal operational area. When the plant is running optimally, the savings potential for a CTMP plant of Skoghall´s size is estimated at 25–50 GWh per year.
Expected long term effects
If "Status" is further developed into a tool, it can be easily implemented in different parts of the process industry. Then it will enable smoother operation and demand-driven maintenance. This will lay the foundation for optimizations and energy savings in these plants. The expansion to multiple CTMP mills is investigated in upcoming projects. Development of "Status" into a tool that can be easily implemented is also investigated.
Approach and implementation
The development of the tool was done at Chalmers together with expert consultants. An early version of the tool was installed at Skoghall mill in a previous project and the developments in the project were installed and run immediately. This allowed the mill staff to test new versions and provide feedback. The work was delayed when testing could not be carried out at the mill due to reorganization at the mill and when the mill´s IT solutions were down.
