Optical fibre probe system for high-precision distance measurement

Reference number
Coordinator RISE Acreo AB - Rise Acreo, Kista
Funding from Vinnova SEK 2 000 000
Project duration November 2012 - July 2017
Status Completed

Purpose and goal

The purpose of the project was to investigate the commercial potential of a fiber optic interferometric measurement method developed by Acreo in collaboration with System 3R International. The goal has been to quantify the market potential and form a strategy for commercialization of this technology. So far, one product has been developed and is available for sale. At present, the assessment is that the overall market is still small and continued work will be required to find the right areas of application.

Expected results and effects

The interferometer is now being marketed by System 3R and with whom Acreo now has a business relationship. In addition, there are several contacts with companies with an interest in technology. As well as a plan for continued commercialization. On the technical side, Acreo has acquired competence in calibration. The unique advantages of the instrument in relation to competing technologies have been clarified as well as production costs. Demonstrators with max measurement distance 1.8mm, 6kHz measurement frequency, and nanometer accuracy have been constructed.

Planned approach and implementation

In the original plan, the project was divided into three phases. Before and after each phase, a meeting has been held and future activities discussed. The plan has therefore changed during the project. The project has been delayed several times for various reasons from the original time frame 2012-11-15 - 2014-02-28 until a closing date 2017-07-28. Acreo has been the only participant in the project.

The project description has been provided by the project members themselves and the text has not been looked at by our editors.
