Reference number
Coordinator Aerocrine Aktiebolag
Funding from Vinnova SEK 1 500 000
Project duration September 2012 - September 2013
Status Completed

Purpose and goal

The project is aimed at developing NIOX PAED-an innovative diagnostic and monitoring device for non-cooperative measurement of nitric oxide (NO) in children below the age of seven and other groups of non-cooperative patients. The R&D challenges presented by the project will be tackled by an active R&D cooperation between Aerocrine AB and FILT GmbH. The result of the project shall establish new state-of-the art in asthma diagnostics and strengthen participants´ competitiveness on the global market. These goals have been met.

Results and expected effects

The project has developed a new state-of-the-art equipment, methods and clinical procedures for measuring exhaled NO. Project implementation and commercialization of the results have strengthened the collaborating parties´ competitiveness and serves as a basis for their long-term growth and profitability. This successful R & D work has opened up new attractive market segments for the project participants. The most important finding is that children as young as age 3 can now be diagnosed better.

Approach and implementation

The project defined technical requirements on the components that came to be included in the product. Next, the first prototype of NIOX PAED and technical and clinical validation studies were conducted. The project ended with optimization of the design and development of a product that allows for advanced measurement and control of NO value in children under seven. Aerocrine stood for excellence in product definition, clinical, regulatory requirements, medical technology and production while FILT contributed with technical expertise and electromechanical design.
