Purpose and goal

The project "New chempraxis 2.0" addresses the growing risks of unwanted chemicals in water, which threaten both the environment and public health. The goal is to develop and implement a new national praxis for risk assessment and early management of chemicals in water, laying the foundation for a national coordinating function to support assessment of healthy drinking water and ensure reliable reuse of treated wastewater, as well as to protect the aquatic ecosystems.

Expected effects and result

The national function will be a permanent, nationally coordinated expert resource bridging over existing and future organizations and working methods, providing guidance, tools, and support for risk assessment and management of chemicals inwater, as well as serving as a knowledge hub between research, policy, and practice within the water sector and environmental protection.

Planned approach and implementation

Actors from the water sector, academia, authorities, and industry develop methods, tools, and guidelines on chemical risks in water. The project focuses on two case studies: Lake Mälaren - a drinking water source and recipient, and the Himmerfjärden wastewater treatment plant with a focus on the reuse of treated water. Particular emphasis is on analytical methods, data management, and risk assessment, as well as economic and governance, societal acceptance, implementation, and legislation.
