Purpose and goal

During this project a novel environmentally friendly biomaterial with antimicrobial agents were developed aimed to be used as wound dressings. The addition of the antimicrobial was achieved by a low-cost method in aqueous media and it was possible to control the amount of the agent in the nanocellulose. Moreover, it was found that by tuning the structuring of the biomaterial it was possible to increase the fluid absorption of the materials.

Expected results and effects

A new type of wound dressing material based on biopolymers has been developed. An antimicrobial agent was then added by an aqueous method which also had an influence in the fluid absorption of the material. Moreover, depending on the structuring it was possible to improve the fluid absorption. Compare with similar wound dressing materials this project has achieved better fluid absorption with potential antimicrobial properties.

Planned approach and implementation

The project has tested the hypothesis that it is possible to develop biobased materials for wound dressings applications. Therefore, the current TRL of the project is 4. It is expected that NanoMedic Sweden will continue working in this project in collaboration with RISE. Moreover, larger projects and investments will be required to take the material to higher TLR and to the market.
