Model Validation from Concept to Product

Reference number
Coordinator SAAB Aktiebolag - SAAB AB
Funding from Vinnova SEK 3 140 000
Project duration September 2013 - May 2016
Status Completed

Purpose and goal

The overall aim of the project is to develop a well founded methodology for credibility assessment of large-scale system simulators. Simulator users and decision-makers should get information about the credibility of the models included in a simulator - directly during the simulation, or even better, before initiating a simulation. The developed methodology has received very positive feedback in the industrial evaluations a Saab and VTI. The project has also improved collaboration between industry and academia regarding approximate methods for early model validation.

Expected results and effects

The evaluation, carried out in conjunction with sharp simulator testing at Saab, the methodology enables continuous model improvement. Furthermore, the methodology is assessed to reduce the number of erroneous conclusions from simulation testing, implying increased possibility for early detection of design errors. In addition, the number of unnecessary or irrelevant simulator tests is reduced. Overall, this contributes to a more efficient model-based development of complex systems and products.

Planned approach and implementation

The project has been carried out in collaboration between Saab Aeronautics, the Swedish National Road and Transport Research Institute (VTI) and Div. of Machine Design at Linköping University. Saab and VTI has extensive experience in development and use of large-scale simulators. This experience has been used extensively in the development of methodologies and tools for credibility assessment. The exchange between the project partners have worked very well. Great attention has been paid to ensure the industrial relevance of the methodology and tools developed within the project.
