Model based estimation of microcirculatory parameters in a multimodal optical instrument

Reference number
Coordinator Perimed Aktiebolag
Funding from Vinnova SEK 2 445 000
Project duration December 2011 - October 2013
Status Completed

Purpose and goal

The aim to develop a product prototype that generates output in physiologically relevant units has been achieved. Good understanding of the requirements of the hardware has been reached. The conducted clinical trials are very promising but more measurements and further analysis is required before the clinical relevance is fully proven. The plan to set up a product development projects for launch in 2015 has been delayed due to other projects. Instead Perimed may produce more prototypes to individual clients in clinical research market to conduct further clinical studies.

Results and expected effects

The project has demonstrated that a greater understanding can be achieved through the combined ability to simultaneously measure oxygen saturation, blood concentration and velocity resolved blood flow. The combined technique based on extensive simulations also provides the desired effect of absolute values which are more easily interpreted for the user. This has a great potential even though this is probably most relevant for the clinical market and it remains a good deal before the product is ready for the clinical market.

Approach and implementation

The hardware and method development has reached every goal. The clinical evaluation has been very extensive and the results are very promising. However, there are not sufficient concrete results and further studies are needed to convince the clinical market. This part of the project has been a top priority and it was not anticipated that this part would be completed during this project. The knowledge transfer of the project has not been prioritized to the extent initially planned, but it has essentially been solved through the employment of one key person.

The project description has been provided by the project members themselves and the text has not been looked at by our editors.
