Venture Challengedriven innovation - Phase 3 Implementation

Purpose and goal

Digitization of society, increased mobile use of communication services, and increased requirements for accessibility, security and integrity have led to the need to update the existing model for delivering wireless and mobile network services in apartment buildings and stipulated new requirements for the roles in the existing fiber access. The project has proposed Communication Operator 2.0 (KO2.0) - technical solutions and a business model for financing basic internet, high-quality wireless coverage via WiFi, and mobile coverage indoors in apartment buildings.

Expected results and effects

KO 2.0 enables funding for infrastructure for mobile and wireless coverage indoors and is probably the only proposal on the market today for funding mobile coverage indoors anchored to the business model for rental apartments in Sweden. Satisfactory indoor coverage is set as requirement at KO procurement. KO 2.0 includes a basic Internet wireless service for all tennants and also helps to alleviate digital exclusion. The project has knowledge about at least one ongoing KO 2.0-like procurement in the Stockholm region. There is interest in KO 2.0 from other municipal housing companies.

Planned approach and implementation

Pilot installations in apartment buildings in operation to test the technology and customer attitude. Three pilots with different ownership models have been implemented. One (elderly housing) was canceled due to a covid-19 pandemic. Result: The solution is best accepted by the residents if it is available and delivered as-a-service (password) when moving in. It is close to maintenance-free if built in an integrated way by the same stakeholder. Business model: broad effort with several actors in order to achieve a model that can work immediately. Result: KO2.0 as a working proposal.
