Purpose and goal

Rivus AB is developing metal-free, water-based electrolytes for flow batteries based on inexpensive bulk chemicals, enabling safe and sustainable energy storage without raw material shortages. The project will verify the performance of the technology in civil-military environments and develop a dual-use strategy. The goal is a European value chain for fire-safe, cost-effective storage.

Expected effects and result

The project is expected to result in verified tests that confirm the safety, robustness and reliability of Rivus metal-free, water-based electrolytes in civil-military environments. The results will enable scale-up to pilot installations and strengthen Swedish and European supply capacity in energy storage. The effect will be increased resilience, reduced import dependence and a foundation for a secure local value chain for sustainable energy storage.

Planned approach and implementation

The project is implemented in three work packages: (1) mapping of the Swedish and European supply chain for domestic production of organic electrolytes, (2) technical validation of performance and safety in defense-relevant environments, and (3) development of a dual-use business strategy through needs-owner dialogues and market analysis. The work is followed up monthly, with support from industry partners and an academic reference group.
