Project duration August 2016 - May 2017
Status Completed

Purpose and goal

The goal for this preliminary study of coke making at a steel plant was to deepen the knowledge about the mechanism for generation of dust and determine where the risk for dust generation is elevated. Furthermore, to be the basis for a project proposal with the aim to reduce dust generation. The results in the pre-study is deemed sufficient for such a proposal. Thus, the goals of the pre-study is fulfilled.

Expected results and effects

The effect of the pre-study is to increase knowledge about the mechanism and the causes for generation of dust during coke making, for further work within the field. The study identified process steps and furnaces that gave indications towards elevated risk to cause generation of dust. Furthermore, this opens up for more in-depth studies in order to control and reduce the generation of dust during coke making.

Planned approach and implementation

The pre-study aimed to map the current generation of dust in the coke making process and the possibilities to reduce this generation. Operating data was analysed to investigate where the risks for generation of dust are elevated and whether there are any furnace control parameters that influence this. A recently installed measurement equipment for gas analysis was used in combination with directed experimental trials where samples were taken from the process. The method for direct measurements could not be fully validated.
