Purpose and goal

The project aimed to demonstrate the feasibility of autonomous vehicles in public transportation. The project was subdivided into 4 showcase areas; 1.City Pilot; to safely drive autonomously in scenarios relevant for autonomous driving in urban areas 2.Bus Stop Pilot; be able to drive autonomously into bus stops in urban scenarios to allow a city bus 3.Depot Driving; to be able to handle the driving in depot areas where vehicles would be stored when not operating to service passengers. 4.Remote Driving; to be able to drive an autonomous vehicle remotely from an office environment

Expected results and effects

The project was able to perform demonstrations for all of the key showcase areas. The final results were demonstrated in a final project webinar together with the project partners. We were able to demonstrate advances in key technical work packages; - Environmental perception with radar, lidar and cameras together with Veoneer - Situational awareness together with KTH - Remote Drive and V2N2V technology over 5G - Operating in a complete transport system with partner project iQMobility Going forwards, research continues in selected areas. A pilot project will follow in 2022 in Qatar

Planned approach and implementation

The project was set up with 10 work packages. This was extended to 13 by the end of the project and some of the larger areas could have been subdivided even further as it was understood the overall complexity. Overall the designed work packages were successfully able to deliver a pair of "full stack" research buses where it was possible to deliver our main showcases, and perform experiments. The main challenges in delivering the project in this structure were organisational, due to participants restructuring and fragmenting as the overall area expanded.
