Important results from the project
The aim of the project has been to develop models that describe efficient interactions between product design and global production and logistics networks, addressing the research questions: Which global factors have an influential role for product design? Which product design factors have an influential role for design of global operations networks?
Expected long term effects
The key results from the project are two models. One includes eleven factors that strongly influences the interaction between product design and global operations network designs, and the other links integral and modular products with integral and modular networks. Both models have been tested with real products and networks and can provide guidance on establishing efficient interactions.
Approach and implementation
We have performed two studies. First, a multiple-case study at manufacturing firms with global operations and different types of product designs, and second, a questionnaire survey to Swedish firms. We have discussed the ´ideal´ relationships between products and networks with the company representatives as well as studied actual product global operations cases. The survey yielded 82 responses, a response rate of 20 %.
