Project duration November 2017 - June 2021
Status Completed

Purpose and goal

The purpose of the project was to develop innovative logistics concepts for increased inland and coastal shipping. Despite the fact that there have been two entrepreneurs with strong driving forces and clear ambitions to start up inland shipping, it turned out that the conditions were not the right ones to actually get started. It is clear that new logistics solutions need support in the very difficult initial phase and key actors have important roles in contributing to the realization of inland shipping, both authorities and industry parties.

Expected results and effects

The aim of the project was to contribute to a modal shift to inland and coastal shipping and thereby reduce a) the environmental impact of transport, and b) the congestion on roads and the railway network. The case studies that are conducted within the project involve several actors and the activities carried out during the period contribute to an increased dialogue about possible business arrangements for logistics solutions on the inland waterways and what is required of key actors in order for these to be realized.

Planned approach and implementation

The work includes 12 studies within business models, regulations and incentives, ship concepts and freight flow characteristics. The researchers have followed two entrepreneurs’ start up of inland shipping in Sweden, with a focus on container transport between Gothenburg and specific inland ports in Göta Älv and lake Vänern. Key actors have been involved in a reference group. Three logistics alternatives were compared in a MAMCA (Multi-Actor-Multi-Criteria-Analysis) where different actor perspectives were captured. An electrified ship concept has also been developed.
