Increased accessibility and security for the visually impaired in public outdoor settings

Reference number
Coordinator Bollebygds Plast AB
Funding from Vinnova SEK 467 360
Project duration December 2015 - December 2016
Status Completed

Purpose and goal

The project ´increased availability/security for the visually impaired in public outdoor environment´ has had as goal to investigate and develop ground tile products with built-in heat for pedestrian-lanes in order to a) retain tactility also in cold climate conditions and b) avoid skidding accidents due to snow/ice, with a focus on the visually impaired. BPAB has, with the help of Vinnova´s funding developed and launched such products in the form of heated ground plates with sinus-grooves and contrast markings. These products have been tested and performed well with good results.

Expected results and effects

BPAB expects good market possibilities for the market segment ´energy optimized ground products´ and larger focus within the problem area of tripping/skidding accidents of pedestrians. For BPAB this has meant a substantial increase in the product range and we forecast a growth in sales of heated land tiles which also will result in a higher return on investments. For the society at large, we hope for societal benefits such as reduced frequency of skidding accident during winter seasons among pedestrians but foremost greater security for the visually impaired in outdoor public areas.

Planned approach and implementation

The project started with discussions among accessibility consultants, architects, visually impaired individuals and other organizations believed to be parties of interest. Investigations regarding misc. obstacles took place and a number of small-scale tests in a laboratory environment prior to building of prototypes builds. Prototypes were built with respect to various components, functions, design. Borås City were willing to install a 12 m long guidepath in the City Park, operating Nov 2016. Preliminary results shows good functionality. Other clients are expected to follow.
