Call Medtech4Health: Implementation of medical technology in healthcare in 2024

Purpose and goal

In image-guided diagnostic interventions, X-ray radiation is utilized to visualize blood vessels, enabling precise navigation of medical instruments during procedures. The project´s aim is to develop an advanced radiation shield that offers superior protection for personnel in intervention rooms, surpassing the effectiveness of current protective gear and minimizing or eliminating the need for wearing personal radiation protection equipment.

Expected effects and result

We have developed a product (EPS- Enhanced Protection system) based on the idea of shielding secondary radiation from the patient by covering the patient with radiation-absorbing material, thereby significantly reducing the secondary radiation that personnel are exposed to. This approach reduces the need for personnel to wear personal radiation protection equipment, which is known to cause work-related injuries and discomfort.

Planned approach and implementation

1. Preclinical evaluation EPS where dosimeters are placed on a phantom to systematically identify the combinations of procedures and fluoroscopy angles that may pose the greatest risks for high secondary radiation exposure to personnel. 2. Using personal- and real-time dosimetry, radiation dose levels are mapped at various points on the cath.lab staff. 3. During the project, a case study of modified working methods will be analyzed through qualitative interviews and survey studies.
