Improved Resistance Spot Weldability of Aluminium for Advanced Light-Weight Designs

Reference number
Coordinator SWERIM AB
Funding from Vinnova SEK 2 650 000
Project duration November 2022 - June 2025
Status Ongoing
Venture The strategic innovation programme SIP LIGHTer
Call Strategic innovation program LIGHTer 2022

Purpose and goal

The project will create a guideline for increased resistance spot weldability of advanced aluminium components. The project will lead to increased knowledge regarding how different material properties and defects affect the weldability of aluminium, and generate relevant requirements regarding new equipment and welding systems in order to increase the weldability of different types of aluminium components. The project will generate increased possibilities to design and construct advanced light-weight components in aluminium.

Expected effects and result

The project will lead to increased possibilities to decrease weight through increased use of advanced aluminium components. The guideline created in the project will generate increased knowledge in the field of resistance spot welding of aluminium in the whole production chain, from material production to final product.

Planned approach and implementation

The project consortia consist of companies and people with great knowledge in the whole production chain. The work is divided into 6 work packages: WP1 - Definition of materials, material combinations and quality requirements WP2 - Material properties and impact on weldability WP3 - Advanced solutions, equipment and adaptive systems WP4 - Evaluation of strategies for increased weldability WP5 - Demonstrators WP6 - Project management
