Important results from the project
The project´s main objective – to create understanding and working methods for improved spot weldability of advanced aluminum components – was met. Through benchmarking, testing and collaboration, new knowledge was gained about process robustness and equipment requirements. The project strengthened the industry´s understanding and capability for joining of complex aluminum structures.
Expected long term effects
The project is expected to contribute to increased knowledge on joining of advanced aluminum components, which enables more robust and efficient production of lightweight structures in the automotive industry. This will support the work towards reduced product weight, improved energy efficiency, increased sustainability and strengthened competitiveness for Swedish industry. The project also creates a basis for further research initiatives and technology development.
Approach and implementation
The project aimed at improving spot weld ability of advanced aluminum components, especially mega castings with complex surface properties. Through literature studies, benchmarking of equipment and practical tests, process robustness for cast, extruded and rolled materials was investigated. The collaboration among partners worked well and provided valuable insights. Despite some material shortages and delays due to equipment problems, the project was performed according to plan.
