Reference number
Coordinator SWEDISH MEDTECH SERVICE AKTIEBOLAG
Funding from Vinnova SEK 110 000
Project duration June 2015 - December 2017
Status Completed

Purpose and goal

The purpose of the project was to increase the understanding of what Health Technology Assessment, HTA, for medical technology entails and how it can serve as a basis for the introduction of medical devices in health care. The goal was to build and further develop an HTA knowledge base to serve as a support to companies as well as to healthcare providers. The project identified that more comprehensive change processes are required to develop a functioning HTA methodology that stimulates clinical research and implementation in healthcare than the project´s duration allowed for.

Expected results and effects

The project has contributed to the development of a common HTA knowledgebase, which serves as support for companies, healthcare providers and other relevant stakeholders. The project has been working to highlight the opportunities and challenges that a wider use of HTA for medical technology can have for healthcare and companies, to create a better understanding between the procurement units and HTA departments and, finally, how HTA reports from governmental agencies to a greater extent can reach decision makers at county councils.

Planned approach and implementation

The project started with a status description containing who does what in the HTA area, what an HTA report contains, what medical technology is, how it is regulated and evaluated. A common HTA terminology was worked out. Three parts of the project were a workshop conducted with companies as a foundation for an HTA education, a case study on how a small company works with clinical studies and a full day conference with knowledge exchange between all relevant actors. The project group has had a continuous dialogue with HTA departments at regional / county level and universities.
