Important results from the project

The project met most of the objectives of producing a pyrolysis oil from a forest raw material that was processed into green chemicals which were prepared and further processed chemically to pilot products for wood glue and wood paint with mold protection. Technically, the project went from TRL 3 to 5. For MRL 2 was reached but 3 was the ambition. Trade secrets and access to professional databases were missing. SRL reached level 2 but 3 was the ambition. Good and proven information was missing.

Expected long term effects

The project has created a good platform for understanding the complexity and the need for new knowledge for a value chain for green chemicals with its base in forest biomass. A clear exchange of experiences and knowledge happened which has overall raised awareness of what is required to be able to create successful and competitive value chains from biomass. Examples of this are new process technology and regulatory and politically defined classifications and names for materials and products.

Approach and implementation

The project planning with 6 work packages and 10 milestones was largely followed with some changes. The schedule was expanded in one round to include the important steps of implementing green chemicals in pilot products and a good overall analysis. Some replanning was needed when Byggelit chose to leave the project, but the other parties adapted their activities in a good way to compensate for this. The collaboration in the project worked excellently and the consortium is planning more meetings.
