Reference number
Coordinator Norrlands Universitetssjukhus - Norrlands universitetssjukhus

Project duration May 2014 - November 2016
Status Completed
Venture Challenge-driven innovation - Phase 2 Collaboration

Purpose and goal

Supported by current research Gentle Radiotherapy has evaluated and developed products and methods for MRI-only radiotherapy. This has resulted in 12 MR in RT-tailored products and extensive methodology guides for MR in RT and QA of this process. These results will now be implemented for four large diagnostic groups in processes led by 4 university hospitals and 6 strategically important businesses, thus giving patients in these diagnostic groups a more effective, individualised and gentle radiotherapy.

Expected results and effects

Gentle Radiotherapy has resulted in 12 products, among those evaluated and developed, ready for clinical implementation. The project has also had a substantial international recognition for its work and also a clear academic support for the ambition of an MR-only RT. The projects ambitions is that during the upcoming years Sweden will pave the way for development of clinical MR in RT, as first to implement MR-only RT for such large diagnostic groups with improved efficiency and less side effects whilst also paving way for innovative treatment options supported by clinical studies.

Planned approach and implementation

The constant assessment has been that such a complex vision fosters the need for a large co-operative project with strong support from clinicians, academics and enterprise. It is also important that this development is done with haste to capitalise on the benefits of Sweden being front runners both clinically and commercially. With these imperatives guiding the project, Gentle Radiotherapy has gathered Swedens University Hospitals along with 6 strategically important vendors with key radiotherapy products in a open, innovative environment striving for common goals.
