Important results from the project
The project shows that Gatulabba´s methods are still relevant for involving children in shaping future street environments. Self-driving cars do not solve the problems of car dependency – we must shape the city of the future from a child´s perspective. The work has developed new speculative design methods for child involvement and laid the foundation for continued method development. The collaboration between students and children has provided new perspectives on inclusive urban planning.
Expected long term effects
Gatulabba 2045 strengthens future skills in education, research, and planning. Children, students, and professionals have been given tools to think more future-oriented. The project has developed new methods that combine speculative design and child involvement and initiated a public dialogue on the role of self-driving cars in the city of the future. The results are disseminated via policy briefs, films, podcasts, and method fact sheets.
Approach and implementation
The project was planned as a series of exploratory workshops with children, meant to stepwise lead up to a movie, publications, and a final event to spur discussions. As a whole, the plan can be considered to be realized, although deviations have occurred. The exploratory nature of the workshops called for more reconsiderations and improvizations than expected, which is why we engaged an artistic director for some activities. Also, the work with publications continues beyond the project time.
