Future brass alloy for water distribution systems

Reference number
Coordinator Swerea KIMAB AB
Funding from Vinnova SEK 2 000 000
Project duration November 2013 - November 2015
Status Completed

Purpose and goal

The project has strongly contributed to the development and the pre-commercialization of AquaNordic®, an innovative lead free brass alloy which combines high corrosion resistance and machinability with a lower price than competitors. This new material, which is accepted by all existing legislations regarding health and environmental aspects, was successfully tested at many of Nordic Bras Gusum´s customers. The project will also result in at least three scientific papers or conference contributions.

Results and expected effects

The developed alloy, AquaNordic® is under commercialization and is already an available product from Nordic brass Gusum. There is a large interest in the new alloy from product producers and good opportunities for Nordic Brass Gusum to increase their market share. The interest around the project has also resulted in a mobilization of the Swedish brass industry and several common research funding applications, which will hopefully lead to future development work.

Approach and implementation

The work was carried out faster than expected thanks to a strong involvement from Nordic Brass Gusum and a very good collaboration between the project partners. The project have combined industrial experience from the participating companies with research excellence in the form of corrosion expertise, thermomechanical processing and thermodynamic simulations, the latest gathered from the steel industry and applied to brass, which is a totally new approach for the brass industry.

The project description has been provided by the project members themselves and the text has not been looked at by our editors.
