Call Business models for sustainable forest-based industries

Purpose and goal

The project aims to develop a scalable business model and repeatable method to bring bio-based polymers to market, focusing on replacing fossil plastics. Despite technical maturity and low climate impact, broad commercialization of bioplastics is challenging due to complex value chains. The goal is to identify attractive applications and establish business models enabling durable products to reach the market.

Expected effects and result

The project aims to: • Create a scalable business model to commercialize lignin and other low‑carbon materials • Increase fossil plastic substitution and resource efficiency in forest‑based value chains • Develop a repeatable, proven methodology to move lignin‑based polymers from validated materials to commercial launch • Establish business ecosystems and deeper partnerships between Lignin Industries and industrial companies.

Planned approach and implementation

The project begins with an analysis phase, comparing the lignin-based material to fossil plastics across factors like carbon footprint, cost, and technical performance to identify high-potential uses. In the following commercialization phase, solution owners and potential customers will collaborate through workshops and workstreams to realize and launch the most promising applications.
