Project duration December 2013 - April 2014
Status Completed

Purpose and goal

Ve have fulfilled the purpose in that we have analyzed the needs of translation in depth with nursing staff and patients. We have obtained a lot of useful information. We know what languages are relevant for translation, we have discussed with other hospitals and 1177 initiatives. We have interviewed researchers in the field at KTH, Chalmers and Gothenburg University and people at relevant companies. We have not developed anything in detail for the process of forward committment procurement as our analysis indicated that this was perhaps not a likely next step.

Results and expected effects

We have gained solid information from our needs and market analyses and believe we have a good undestanding for the situation today and the potential for satisfying the needs. The needs are somewhat different vs the initial hypothesis. The nursing staff do need translational help but also have other challenges due to cultural differences and that some in the patient group have difficulties defining what they are suffering from. Many patients prefer the help of relatives to interpreters and translation tools. We have a good basis for recommending the next steps.

Approach and implementation

The main focus have been on evaluating the needs of nursing staff and patients at the hospital for translations. A great number of interviews have been carried out with staff, patients, relatives and interpreters. We have investigated potential suppliers of the product, what is available on the market and also studied R&D, eg through contacts with KTH, Chalmers and Gothenburg University. We have also contacted other hospitals and the initiatives of 1177.

The project description has been provided by the project members themselves and the text has not been looked at by our editors.
