Important results from the project
The aim was to train the PhD student to use the latest neutron imaging tools to study the Cd stress in wheat and to obtain new knowledge to support the wheat industry in finding solutions to the Cd problem. The outcome of the project was the PhD student training in use of the neutron imaging tools e.g. obtain data, analyse and summarise results and map the Cd stress in wheat. With the new training and competence obtained by the PhD student, the valuable new knowledge on the new strategies on management of the Cd sensitive genotypes is provided to the industrial partner.
Expected long term effects
The PhD student was trained in building competence in neutron imaging and the knowledge obtained is expected to contribute to improved strategies in Cd management by the industrial partner. We expected that the neutron imaging might be a suitable method for mapping Cd and drought stresses. The results indicate that the new knowledge in using neutron scattering tools in mapping Cd stress needs to be further explored on mapping drought stress. Better understanding of Cd and drought stresses is very valuable for the industrial partner and other wheat producers.
Approach and implementation
ISIS was closed and Covid 19 restrictions limit traveling to UK, so the neutron experiment was performed in UK and video was used. Two Durum wheat varieties from Lilla Harrie Valskvarn were studied. Cd concentration was optimised in the greenhouse (pre-experiment) prior neutron experiment. The experiment was repeated for neutron radiography and neutron imaging at IMAT, ISIS, UK by the beam line scientist and the samples were projected for a real-time neutron radiography to study Cd uptake and neutron imaging for root architecture and water uptake.
