Important results from the project
We would like to create a more equitable and sustainable development of unaccompanied children foster care (Ebo). We realized not all those who want to be a foster parent have sufficient knowledge in Swedish to participate the mandatory family education implemented by the municipality. This language barrier prevents them from participating the family education, as well as increases segregation and exclusion. for both foster parents and unaccompanied children. We are the first and only organization that provides the family education in languages other than Swedish.
Expected long term effects
We have trained nine female informants to facilitate the family education in languages other than Swedish, including Dari/ Pashto, Somali, and Arabic. It corresponds to the needs of the majority and the placement of unaccompanied children. There were 35 families, 20 women and 15 men, participated in the project. We have also approached 41 unaccompanied children. The participants viewed it as a valuable experience. It also proved that there is a great need for this project. Besides, we have developed an interaction model along with training materials that are ready to disseminate.
Approach and implementation
We would like to develop a method that can integrate human rights and gender equality into the National Board of Health and Welfare´s family education. Through a collaboration model, our communicators educate and recruit women from the Ebo-Homes. We chose women as our target audience because it is mostly women who are primarily responsible for family´s inner life and child care. It can also give them an overview of the social situation of children and young people in Sweden. Our next step is to implement bilingual informant training.
