FLOW - Smart and Affordable Floating Offshore Wind Power

Reference number
Coordinator FLOWOCEAN AB
Funding from Vinnova SEK 1 383 967
Project duration November 2017 - March 2020
Status Completed

Purpose and goal

Flowocean has developed an innovative technology for floating wind power and is now in the process of commercializing it. The goal of this project has been to complete the design and optimization work required to get started with a first demonstration project in real marine environment that will demonstrate the innovative technology, FLOW. A lot of valuable work has been done that clearly contributes to the fact that the company is now (May 2020) ready to start a pilot project for operation in a real marine environment.

Expected results and effects

Most of the design work has been finished and integrated into a CAD model. A Product requirement document has been produced according to current standards. Some of the final documentation remains. The development of the simulation tools has come a long way. Model with geometry and parameters is implemented as well as loads from anchoring, buoyancy forces, self-weight forces and time integration. Wind and wave forces still need to be implemented. The work done so far har resulted in a demonstration project being far developed and is expected to commence shortly.

Planned approach and implementation

Most of the work has been carried out by our own technical manager and with consultants. Some work have also been carried out together with subcontractors. This has both strengthened existing relationships but also led to new relationships that will be important in further work. For various reasons, caused by the original investor breaking their contract, a larger than planned proportion of the work than has been done through consultants compared to the original budget.

The project description has been provided by the project members themselves and the text has not been looked at by our editors.
