Finding a system for food waste collection from households with domestic waste collected in plastic bags; a pre-study

Reference number
Coordinator Stockholm Vatten Avfall AB
Funding from Vinnova SEK 229 200
Project duration October 2014 - September 2015
Status Completed

Purpose and goal

The market dialogue has examined the conditions for finding a solution to the initial need; to find an automated function enabling food waste from properties with the bag system to be collected and separated to eventually undergo biological treatment. To find a solution seems feasible but probably requires that external compensation for development can be provided interested/selected suppliers. Internal expertise on innovation and procurement has been generated through the involvement of external specialists in that area.

Results and expected effects

Internal knowledge regarding both innovation and procurement has been generated throughout the study. SVA internal working group is now ready to initiate the next stage. The market dialogue shows a large interest in finding a solution among many actors. This also indicates that the problem is not unique to SVA.

Approach and implementation

Information was gathered through interviews with relevant stakeholders both within and outside the waste management industry. The work was carried out by an external consultant; probably resulting in the market being open-minded for discussion and willing to share valuable information. To include expertise in procurement has been successful since many aspects regarding procurement have emerged. Additionally it has also generated internal knowledge regarding both innovation and procurement.
