Purpose and goal

The Biorefinery of the Future, Phase 2´ is a project devoted to build up a strong national cluster in the field of biorefining. It is involving not only industrial partners, but also academic and governmental partners as well as non-member companies. The purpose is to invent and develop new products based on forest raw material and develop more efficient processes for the biorefinery industry. In relation to our original goals in 2008 it looks very promising. Several objectives are already completed and have been raised and most goals appear to be met by a wide margin until 2016.

Results and expected effects

Our work to increase and catalyze the biorefinery development in the region have led to many results, ideas, and networks that also in the future will generate new green products, chemicals, fuels and energy solutions from forest resources. Concrete results are 77 patent applications and two patents, 16 new products, 20 prototypes, 9 new processes and around 40 scientific publications from our project portfolio so far. Four new companies have been formed in the cluster. Many projects and processes are now ready or almost ready for scale-up.

Approach and implementation

Our work together with member companies and other actors to initiate and manage projects within the area of biorefinery has been successful. The systems with contact persons and the R&D-Council activities have led to increased interest and commitment in project participation. We have organized the work to capture good ideas for projects, project implementation and follow up. We continue our work on improving results to reach full scale commercialization.
