Eurostarsproject E!10974 PBD, Chalmers - Development of a Procurement Big Data software and method

Reference number
Coordinator CHALMERS TEKNISKA HÖGSKOLA AKTIEBOLAG - Institutionen för teknikens ekonomi och organisation
Funding from Vinnova SEK 2 000 000
Project duration January 2017 - December 2019
Status Completed
Venture Eurostars

Purpose and goal

The Chalmers role in the project was to define and analyze procurement business requirements and PBD use cases, whereas Sievo focused on developing services based on data science components. From the use case analyses we identified few advanced PBD cases. We analyze and explain the potential of PBD and explore and suggest categories of application areas, data sources and required organizational capabilities for PBD.

Expected results and effects

Companies are putting much effort to advance analytics in the procurement area. Despite the potential of BDA in procurement, it came obvious that few companies have come far in their PBD implementation and in realizing true benefits of PBD. The results identify potential data sources, analytical approaches and future application areas for PBD, and show how companies can organize and develop capabilities for PBD implementation.

Planned approach and implementation

The project comprised of three studies: (1) Literature review of all published academic articles on PBD, (2) Survey of PBD in 60 Swedish, Finnish, German and Swiss companies, and (3) 22 case studies in companies in Sweden and Finland. The survey described current PBD applications, capabilities and effects; and expected future implementations and effects. The case studies analyzed the status of PBD in companies, and the organizational capabilities and strategies to develop and implement PBD.
