Eurostar project XamFlow 9126 CMIV

Reference number
Coordinator KUNGLIGA TEKNISKA HÖGSKOLAN - Kungliga Tekniska Högskolan/Skolan för teknik och hälsa
Funding from Vinnova SEK 1 543 354
Project duration January 2015 - February 2017
Status Completed
Venture Eurostars

Purpose and goal

Develop a system capable of handling the complete workflow of micro-CT examinations, from measurement to a full interactive report with image analysis and advanced imaging. The main contribution of KTH in the project was to develop and integrate methods for analysis of trabecular bone into the new system.

Expected results and effects

- Adaptation of the existing code for analysis of trabecular bone in binary and gray scale to Xamflow - Development of new methods for analysis of trabecular and cortical bone - Validation of the methods with in vitro and in vivo studies - 2 journal papers (1 accepted and 1 under review) and 6 conference contributions were produced in the project. Expected effects: - Xamflow is now ready to be used in clinical studies in osteoporosis

Planned approach and implementation

Xamflow is a complex system that integrates different modules. Thus, at the beginning of the project a standard deployment procedure was devised in order to make the integration as flexible and simple as possible. Two modules were developed: binary and gray scale, where segmentation of trabecular bone is required for the former. The analysis modules were coded in Python using both standard image processing libraries from Python (scipy and numpy) and SimpleITK.
