EUREKA project E!8023 EUHipSafe, Ortoma AB

Reference number
Coordinator Ortoma AB
Funding from Vinnova SEK 1 500 000
Project duration November 2012 - October 2013
Status Completed

Purpose and goal

The objective is to modernize current practices in hip surgery by developing an intraoperativ navigational system, allowing surgeons to perform faster and safer procedures. Ortoma evaluate that both goal and objective for the project has been successful and that this project has not been possible without an Eureka cooperation

Results and expected effects

Development of a 3D preoperative planning system for a Total Hip Replacement is in a final stage. Different measuring tests during the project has shown that it is possible to integrate a medical planning sofware with an industrial measuring system and that this can be both very accurate and sufficient for clinical use. The result has led to a plan for continued commercialization. The final product will enable higher precision while a ´Total Hip Replacement´ is performed and consequently reduce failures during operation and prolong lifetime of prothesis implantation.

Approach and implementation

Development in the project has included: Significant software development to develop a 3D preoperative planning system. To identify suitable industriell measuring-system including system from Optimet, Israel. Initiating development of an interface between a surgical measuring-system and a preoperative planning system. To perform test measuring e.g. Optimet measuring-system. Establish a cooperation with orthopedic surgeons. Demonstrate the system and navigational concept for surgeons incl workshop. Clinical testing of software.
