EUREKA ITEA2 SCALARE

Reference number
Coordinator SIGRUN SOFTWARE INNOVATION AND ENGINEERING INSTITUTE AB
Funding from Vinnova SEK 4 049 916
Project duration December 2013 - January 2017
Status Completed

Purpose and goal

The goal for Sigrun´s involvement in Scalare has been threefold: One has been to develop the Scalability Management Framework (SMF), which is a novel, holistic model for scaling up software including synchronized changes to product, process, and organisation. Another is project dissemination by development of the book "Scaling Software Business - The Digitalization Journey" published by Springer. Finally, Sigrun has been managing the Swedish subproject as Country coordinator and contributed to forming consultancy services and Master classes around Scalare.

Expected results and effects

"Our organisation has become a software company. The problem is that our engineers haven´t realised that yet!" This is how the VP Research of a major semiconductor manufacturing company, traditionally seen as the classic hardware company, characterized the context in which software solutions were replacing hardware in delivering their products. The results of SCALARE will assist industries in scaling up their software capability as software moves from secondary consideration to primary importance through the book, workshops, and consultancy services.

Planned approach and implementation

The project has been organized as five major work packages. WP1 for the Scaling management framework (SMF) , WP 2-4 for scaling aspects of product, process, and organisation, and WP 5 for dissemination. The work has been done in an incremental way where new versions of SMF have been developed and used in WP 2-4 in order to test the framework and receive feedback for the next increment. When SMF was mature enough, it has been used in several workshops with companies. The results have been reported as a part of WP5 in seminars, workshops, newsletters, a masterclass, web contents, and a book.
