Important results from the project
The project´s objective was to develop and validate methodology to demonstrate that an automated road vehicle is safe, focusing on the areas human/ADS interaction, risk analysis, architecture and sensors, and requirements refinement verification. The goals have been achieved by identifying the fundamental differences that exist between showing that manual and automated vehicles are safe, and then develop a number of safety assurance methods that are adapted for automated vehicles. The methods have been applied to small but realistic examples.
Expected long term effects
The project results are principles and analysis methods for safe handover between a human and ADS, a new method for risk analysis, principles for defining the limits within which an ADS is designed to function, methods and principles for safety requirements in architecture and sensors, and basic ideas about an iterative work process using safety contracts. The project has contributed to state-of-the-art, and new research questions have also been identified in all topics. To show that an automated vehicle is safe is an area where better and more efficient methods are still required.
Approach and implementation
The project has been organized into two smaller work packages that produced use cases for passenger cars and trucks, and which could then be used as an example in the five technical work packages that dealt with the different safety assurance topics. The work packages have worked iteratively and exchanged results and feedback. All results have been documented in the project´s deliverables, as well as in peer-reviewed scientific publications.
